This year, on 14 March, it was Leiston & District’s turn to host the Suffolk Beekeepers’ Association’s AGM. The hosting comes around every six years and when it’s our turn we try to do something a bit different.
This time we provided refreshments from local food producers in our area, as well as homemade cakes. And we invited Derek Jones of DJ Wines, a thriving Suffolk business, to give us a talk on his fruit wines and liqueurs, and his mead, which he makes using honey from one of our members, David Burns.
During the business part of the meeting, awards were given out. Firstly, Leiston & District won the cup for the highest percentage of members passing their BBBKA Basic exam. This was the second year in a row that we’d won this so we are very pleased. And secondly, Penny Robertson was awarded the Martin Rosebowl for services to L&DBKA. This award is given to the member of the hosting association that, in the opinion of their committee, has gone above and beyond in their work for the association. On receiving the award, Penny explained that she worked so hard for L&DBKA as she always remembers how important it was to her when she started. She thanked particular people that had helped her namely Graham Owston, Laurie Wiseman and John Blakesley.
The meeting closed with discussion of the Asian Hornet, and then everyone was able to taste Derek’s wines, eat more food and generally mingle and chat.
Thanks to those Leiston members that came along to support us.
