Just a year before the Second World War broke out, this picture shows a beekeeping tutor and students at the Battersea Men's Institute in 1938. The BMI opened in 1920 and was run by the London County Council. In 1929 it had 1100 members, who paid a small sum to join classes. By the time this photo was taken, there were 3000 members. (Women were admitted in the 1940s). How many London apiaries survived the war, I wonder....
